My Teaching Philosophy

I am passionate about teaching and making a difference to my students through seeing each student as an individual, adjusting the teaching approach to their needs, strengths and challenges. I believe all should have an opportunity to enjoy the process of music making. Students are taught in a positive, supportive and encouraging environment allowing pupils to be inspired and self motivated.

It is my goal to develop the musical and technical ability of the pupil, understanding each student so that they get the utmost enjoyment out of playing music. During the early stages of learning the instrument, students learn how to make a piece of music sound communicative and beautiful. This focus on artistry and creativity enables the student's individuality and enjoyment to shine through the music.

Making learning fun and inspirational

Ibelieve students can enjoy and have fun learning music and be encouraged to play with others. I will continuously strive for my pupils to reach their full potential and to learn in a positive and supportive environment. Playing music (either instrument or singing) involves being able to express feelings and share stories through music making as well as the technical aspects of learning the instrument.

I will introduce the pupil to a wide range of music, continuously keeping my teaching

fresh and using new repertoire with styles, pieces and composers that students particularly enjoy.

To keep pupil's enthusiastic and inspired, I will encourage pupils to make music with others, to play in groups and orchestras and suggest inspirational recordings, artists and concerts to attend.

Practice and advice for parents
Young female student playing a violin

"There are three key participants in the development of any aspiring   musician: the parent/carer, the teacher, and the young musician."

Taken from a quote from Paul Harris - one of the UKs most respected Music Educationalist

My teaching approach also includes giving advice to the pupil, parent or carer on how to practise effectively at home. This enhances the enjoyment of learning tunes and opens up opportunities to perform, take exams, or playing to family and friends with confidence and ease. You don't have to be a musician yourself or have had experience in music lessons to support your child at home. You can find more advice on my FAQ page or drop me a message.

Technique

Lucy has a modern approach to her teaching, keeping in touch with the latest music, apps and technology to both help and inspire her pupils. Pupils are taught using a range of music, theory, violin technique, studies and scales. Exams (ABRSM or Trinity) will be encouraged, but are not essential.

Along with learning the violin, and learning to read music, I believe technique is important. I have been fortunate to have studied under some of the most reputable violin teachers at leading conservatoires in London. The skills I acquired from these esteemed educators are ones that I now impart to my students. Good technique and comfortable posture also holds the key to enjoyment and ease of playing.

Benefits of music

Almost all children love music. Recent studies suggest that playing and listening to music at a improves learning, memory, reasoning ability and general creativity. Music education enhances a child's comprehension abilities, self expression, helps them with maths concepts, assists in co-ordination and fine motor development skills and helps to build self-confidence.

Younger Students

Younger students can start from around the ages of 5, sometimes younger depending on the child - you can try a few lessons to see if it works.

Each lesson will include a a variety of activities chosen from music performance, singing, music appreciation, colouring, movement, listening and rhythm. The lessons are structured to take into account the child's small hands and limited attention span.
